PEEK – high-performance plastic with special processing properties

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is one of the highest-performing thermoplastics. Thanks to its high temperature resistance, exceptional mechanical properties and chemical stability, PEEK is used in demanding industries such as aerospace, automotive, electronics and medical technology. PEEK plays a particularly important role in medical technology due to its biocompatibility and sterilizability. Despite its outstanding properties, processing this high-performance polymer places high demands on process engineering.

Thermal stability during demanding processing

PEEK is characterized by its high resistance to extreme temperatures. The processing temperatures are between 350°C and 400°C, while mold temperatures of up to 200°C are required for processing. These thermal conditions require precise process control and specially adapted injection molding machines and tools. Inadequate temperature control or impurities in the material can have a negative impact on the material properties.

Thermoplastics processing specialists

Gebr. Renggli AG from Schaffhausen, part of the TT medic group, processes all common thermoplastics on its state-of-the-art production facilities. Their production processes and systems have been specially optimized for the processing of PEEK. In addition to the classic injection molding process, carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK is also processed, which offers additional mechanical stability. This expertise enables the company to successfully implement even challenging projects and develop customized solutions for its customers.

Maximum precision in insert molding

A special process is insert molding, in which borosilicate glass is inserted into the mould and then overmoulded with carbon fibre-reinforced PEEK. Due to the high temperatures and the wall thickness of the components, this process is technically demanding. In order to avoid damage due to thermal shock, the glass must be preheated in a targeted manner before overmolding. The temperature differences must be precisely matched to the thermal shock resistance of the glass. In addition, production requires a high degree of precision, as glass blanks have production-related tolerances.

Importance of process stability

A high level of cleanliness and precise adherence to the process parameters are essential for the reliable processing of PEEK. Due to the high processing temperatures and the specific flow properties of the material, the tool design plays a central role. Optimum temperature control and precise production tolerances are crucial to ensure consistently high quality. With over 50 years of experience in toolmaking and injection molding, Gebr. Renggli AG has extensive expertise in this area.

Conclusion

Due to its exceptional properties, PEEK offers a wide range of applications in high-tech industries. At the same time, processing requires specialized procedures and precise process control. Through the targeted use of optimized injection moulding processes, such as insert moulding, even complex applications can be realized. The many years of experience and technical expertise of Gebr. Renggli AG enable the reliable production of sophisticated PEEK components for a wide range of industries.
